Symposium: Educational Migration Research from an Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspective

Heraklion (Crete), Greece | May 7–8, 2026
As part of the 12th International Scientific Conference of I.A.K.E.

The symposium “Educational Migration Research from an Interdisciplinary and Comparative Perspective” aims to explore current dynamics, theoretical frameworks, and empirical approaches in educational migration research from an internationally comparative perspective. It provides a scholarly forum for examining contemporary migration-related challenges in education, while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and identifying transfer potentials to educational practice and policy.

Thematic Focus

Education under Conditions of Heterogeneity, Inequalities, and Social Exclusion: Challenges – Approaches – Perspectives

The symposium focuses on educational processes shaped by forced migration, precarity, discrimination, social inequality, and institutional mechanisms of exclusion. Special emphasis is placed on how these conditions affect educational trajectories, participation opportunities, and experiences of belonging across generations.

Contributions are invited that address, among others:

  • Social constructions of heterogeneity and educational inequality
  • Experiences of injustice and educational justice
  • Moral emotions (e.g. indignation, shame, empathy) as analytical lenses in migration research
  • Intergenerational transmission of educational experiences
  • Intersectional perspectives on education and migration

The symposium encourages interdisciplinary, intersectional, theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions.
