Symposium Educational Migration Research 2025
Symposium
Educational Migration Research from an interdisciplinary and
comparative perspective
Heraklion (Crete), Greece, May 8-9, 2025 as part of the IAKE Congress
Thematic focus:
Current fields of political and extracurricular education
– Call for Papers –
Against the backdrop of intensified political discourses on migration, flight and asylum as well as globally strengthening right-wing populist movements, the study of migration and education in educational research and political education practice is more current than ever.
This raises the question of what central challenges and tasks arise for educational migration research and political education in the context of social and political polarization. Social transformations – from global interconnectedness to digitalization – are relevant for the scientific and educational examination of the central topics of human rights, (global) justice, social inequality and conflict resolution between groups and make an interdisciplinary and comparative approach necessary. The symposium “Educational Migration Research from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective” will explore fields of political and extracurricular education from an interdisciplinary and international comparative perspective.
It is not least a matter of looking at different fields of educational practice as a space of possibility for political reflection in the migration society. Transdisciplinary perspectives can contribute to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities in dealing with migration in political education and set new accents for educational research and the opening of educational institutions to migration society. The international symposium on Crete aims to create a discourse space for the interdisciplinary exchange of innovative approaches.
We invite contributions on the following topics:
- International and comparative perspectives on education in the migration society: transnational biographies, access to education and educational equity; structural barriers for refugee migrants; dealing with migration-related diversity and/or multilingualism in educational institutions.
- Human rights and youth education in times of political polarization: attitudes of young people towards human rights and social justice in the context of political discourses on migration; consequences of digitalization and technological change for human rights and youth education; promotion of social cohesion in the design of educational offers.
- Political education and the promotion of democracy: contributions and current challenges of political education in the confrontation with neo-nationalist tendencies and the promotion of democratic values.
- Flight-migration, global solidarity and educational institutions in host countries: Promoting solidarity and social cohesion in educational institutions; pedagogical approaches to strengthening solidarity.
- Trends towards a desolidarization with refugee migrants and neo-nationalism in Europe: Challenges for educational migration research: Dealing with increasing social polarization and trends towards a desolidarization in educational contexts; challenges and opportunities for educational professionals in dealing with migration related controversies and neo-nationalist attitudes; consequences of right-wing populist movements in Europe for educational institutions; current topics and methodological challenges of educational migration research.
